NofaLab’s journey to EcoVadis Bronze: Overcoming challenges, improving sustainability practices, and strengthening relationships with clients while aligning with Cotecna Group’s ESG objectives.
We are pleased to announce that NofaLab has achieved a significant milestone by securing the EcoVadis ESG Bronze level! This marks a significant milestone not just in NofaLab’s sustainability journey but also aligns with the broader sustainability objectives and commitment to responsible ESG practices of the Cotecna Group.
Through a comprehensive assessment, the EcoVadis ESG score measures a company’s performance across key sustainability criteria, such as environmental impact, labor practices, ethical sourcing, and governance structures. Obtaining a high EcoVadis rating signals a company’s strong commitment to sustainability.
To mark this achievement, we have Gijs MULDER, HSE Officer from NofaLab, detailing how NofaLab has successfully participated in the EcoVadis project:
1. When did NOFA’s journey toward the EcoVadis assessment begin, and what prompted it?
On July 1st, 2024, one of our clients requested that we participate in their EcoVadis/AIM Progress sector initiative to gain a better understanding of the sustainability practices in their supply chain. This request served as the catalyst for us to evaluate and document our sustainability efforts.
2. Who was involved in preparing for the EcoVadis assessment?
The process of uploading information onto the EcoVadis platform was coordinated by me. However, it was truly a team effort. We gathered essential information with the help of several departments, including Human Resources, Finance, ICT, Quality, and Facility. We also utilized valuable resources from Cotecna’s BECC and CCBP to complete the submission.
3. What were the biggest challenges during the assessment process?
One of the biggest challenges was the size and complexity of the project. Providing the correct type of documentation was crucial, but much of the usable information was for Cotecna’s internal use and couldn’t be shared externally. Additionally, sustainability initiatives without proper documentation weren’t considered in the assessment, which highlighted areas for improvement.
4. How did you overcome those challenges?
We tackled these challenges by developing new policies and improving documentation processes. For instance, we created a waste disposal policy to better describe and formalize our recycling measures. This not only improved our assessment score but also enhanced our internal sustainability practices.
5. When did NOFA achieve the EcoVadis Bronze Medal?
We successfully achieved the EcoVadis ESG Bronze level on February 17th, 2025. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and collaboration across various departments within NOFA and the Cotecna Group.
6. How significant is this achievement for NOFA and the Cotecna Group?
Receiving the Bronze EcoVadis Medal is a significant milestone for us. It places us in the top 35% of companies assessed, which is something we’re very proud of, especially considering the challenges faced during the process. It demonstrates our commitment to improving sustainability and aligns with Cotecna’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
7. What key areas were evaluated during the EcoVadis assessment?
The assessment focused on four main pillars: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Our efforts in waste management, employee welfare, and ethical business practices contributed to our overall score.
8. How has this recognition impacted NOFA’s relationships with clients and stakeholders?
This achievement has strengthened our credibility with clients and stakeholders. It assures them that we are actively working to meet sustainability expectations and are committed to continuous improvement. Clients appreciate transparency, and this recognition underscores our dedication to responsible business practices.
9. What lessons has NOFA learned from the EcoVadis assessment?
The assessment highlighted the importance of proper documentation for all sustainability initiatives. Even if we have good practices in place, they need to be formally documented to be recognized. It also showed us where we can improve, particularly in expanding policies and tracking measurable sustainability KPIs.
10. What are NOFA’s next steps toward improving its sustainability efforts?
While we are proud of earning the Bronze medal, we are not stopping here. We plan to enhance our documentation processes, introduce new sustainability initiatives, and aim for an even higher rating in the future. Our goal is to continuously improve and align our operations with global sustainability standards.
